here we go…
Welcome to Local Orbit! A little more than 18 months ago we started talking with local food producers, chefs and eaters about creating a better food chain.
Everyone we talked with was hungry for food that comes from farmers and artisan food producers they know and trust. Many were interested in spending a larger share of their food dollars in their own communities. Everyone had a story about limited or inefficient access to locally produced food.
Independent food producers talked about struggling to build sustainable businesses and the need for economically viable distribution systems for their products. They also wanted business infrastructure to make it easy to track inventory, tell their product stories, communicate with buyers and manage direct sales.
As a result of these conversations, we’ve created Local Orbit. We are a bridge between the deepening demand for locally produced food and existing distribution options that make it difficult for independent producers to get local product to market.
Local Orbit is a network and a marketplace that makes it easy for people to buy food directly from local farmers, food producers and independent retailers in one convenient online location.
We are piloting our service in Brooklyn, New York and Ann Arbor, Michigan. We’ll keep you posted on our growth and welcome your thoughts on the big issues of re-linking the food chain – and on the specific features and services Local Orbit can offer to you.
Thank you, in advance, for participating in the process.
